Help…a foreignerYesterday we wanted to buy a little three-wheel bicycle for our 1 year old son. We went over to one of the shops selling those kind of things and saw some of the little bikes standing outside. While we were looking at them, two girls that worked in the shop were looking from a distance. We heard them talk to each other about ‘the foreigners’. We could see from a distance that they were scared and didn’t want to come to us. After a while they started moving slowly towards us. They both giggled as they walked. Suddenly one of them pushed the other one into our direction. After that, the girl turned around as quick as she could and walked back into the shop. As we were observing I smiled and asked them in Thai: ‘How much is this little bicycle’. Suddenly they came walking to us and very excited they said to each other: ‘The foreigner speaks Thai’. We asked them some questions and they tried as hard as they could to help us. They even climbed on the loft to find a bike like we wanted. They laughed a lot when Nathan was racing through the shop and they even gave 10% discount! It’s amazing to see how people change when you can talk to them in their own language. It’s an encouragement for us to keep pushing in language study so we can communicate better every day! Leave a Reply |
