OMF-Isaan in student ministry? In the middle of Isaan is a university. It is located in the provincial town of Mahasarakham, and it still is a young university. It was only founded in 1994. Yet by now there are 42,000 students, almost as many as the official number of inhabitants of the town. A while ago I walked around on the campus of the university. They were everywhere, students in black trousers or skirts and white blouses. Everywhere large, new buildings with hundreds of parked motor cycles in front of them. 42,000 people! That means every Isaan village in average sends two people to study in this place. What an opportunities to share the Gospel here, and in doing so build bridges to the whole of Isaan. It is not easy to make a good connection between student ministry and church planting. Of course that is not always necessary either. Yet OMF-Isaan is focussing on church planting. The connection can be most easily made when the university is not seen as a closed dome, but as the center of a web from which thousands of lines extend to villages that do not have a single Christian. I hope that the Isaan team in the future will have a few spiders in the middle of that web! Leave a Reply |
